The Riviera Maya growth pattern general visitor trends
The impact of visitors and tourism in the Riviera Maya area signifies strong economic growth to support the development of a major new resort community like Maya Zamá and neighboring Aldea Zamá.
Visitor growth rates to Mexico continues to rise with Cancun leading the way, comprising more than 12 percent of all travel to Mexico. It serves the most international passengers in Latin America Cancun with over 11,000,000 domestic and international visitors in 2007 and continues to be a leading Caribbean destination rivaled only by the Dominican Republic.
Cancun continues to remain a leader with an average of 255 international flights per week in addition to strong air connections to key Mexican cities like Mexico City, Guadalajara and Acapulco.
Recently, the online travel agency Orbitz ranked Cancun in the number two spot for airports outside the United States for travel during the Memorial Day weekend and summer vacation.
Cancun placed second only to Heathrow Airport in London and ahead of other popular international airport destinations around the world.
Tourism increases are also evident in Riviera Maya’s hotel room inventory, which has reached 30,705 rooms in 2006, compared to 25,170 available rooms in 2005 and 23,512 in 2004. In terms of hotel occupancy, 2006 showed an increase to 71.9 percent occupancy as compared to 74.5 percent occupancy in 2005, although not quite reaching 2004 occupancy of 86.4 percent. Nearly three million tourists are expected to visit the Riviera Maya this year with occupancy reaching approximately 78 percent. As infrastructure continues to modernize and expand southward, visitation to the world-famous coastline including the Tulum region is predicted to continue to increase substantially.
